Today Japan has nearly 127 million inhabitants, more than half of which are concentrated in 2% of the available land ! The average density in populated areas reaches more than 1500 inhabitants per km2. With a population in constant growth, although small, the country has been dealing with a serious problem of overcrowding for several decades.

Summer camps
camp
would like to respond to this current problem ; how to house an immense population while ensuring comfort for all and respecting the planet. Very thankfully, there are many ways to resolve this problem. At Objectif Sciences International we have decided to lean towards energy from hot springs and geothermal sources.
Here we are lucky because our Japanese Centre for Scientific Living is located on the Izu peninsula, in the heart of one of the areas richest in hot springs in Japan and the world. Also in the neighbouring village, located next to a dayfunto (a domesticated geyser inside a wooden tower) nearly 500 homes are fed hot water thanks to just one Onsen ! Several towns in Japan are also able to produce their electricity with geothermal energy. So who knows what this incredible non-polluting technology can offer us ? The goal of our project is to design an ecological home fully organized around an Onsen.
During the previous years, participants have conceived interesting prototypes for this house of the future, from an Onsen oven to a heated toilet bowl ! This year it’s up to you to play. After having learned the way the Onsens in the region work, and equipped yourself with a solid knowledge of bioclimatic architecture, it will then be up to you to put in place your own prototype that will come to join the other innovations of the house.
During your stay, you will have the occasion to share your knowledge with the Onsen Garden team, whose project will take place parallel to yours. Moreover, as is the case with all the camps of Objectif Sciences International, you and your team will be responsible for the publication of your research and day to day results on the association’s website.
Naturally, your adventures will permit you to explore the region in depth and to discover forests, rivers, beaches, or waterfalls under the summer sun. Swimming, track games, Olympics, Japanese language classes or karaoke will also be waiting for you, so « matane » [1] !
[1] « Matane » means « see you soon » in Japanese
